Project Detail

Trinity Repertory Company | Lederer Theater Center

Renovation of Performing Arts Facility | Providence, Rhode Island

Trinity Rep was established in 1963 as a not-for-profit regional theater company and continues to thrive, welcoming over 100,000 patrons annually.  Its educational programs reach many local adults and children, including thousands of students attending Project Discovery performances. Trinity hosts an MFA program in partnership with Brown University, currently housed primarily in the Pell Chafee Performance Center. The Lederer Theater Center, formerly the Emery Majestic, houses the Chace and Dowling Theatres, as well as production and support spaces. Investments in the Lederer are ongoing; new HVAC systems, fire protection upgrades, a new roof, and lobby improvements have been completed in the past few years.

Flansburgh helped Trinity Rep to develop strategies to better utilize existing space owned by the company and shed leased space to enhance the company’s financial sustainability. The Facilities Master Plan conducted by Flansburgh involved fit tests of existing buildings, evaluation of existing MEP and structural systems and cost estimation of multiple development options in multiple buildings.

As part of Flansburgh's proposed renovation project, the historic Lederer Theater Center will be upgraded for accessibility. Chace Theatre will be replaced with a flexible space with flat floor and moveable seating risers. Furthermore, a transparent new addition will add a new elevator and offices and strengthen the identity of Trinity Rep from the street.
