Haile-Manas Academy Breaks Ground in Ethiopia

January 7, 2019 |

Haile-Manas Academy, the flagship project of Ethiopia Education Initiatives (EEI), broke ground on December 30, 2018. The school will be built on an 8-hectare (20-acre) site situated in the town of Debre Berhan, approximately two hours away from Ethiopia's capital city Addis Ababa. The new co-educational secondary boarding school will serve 400 students recruited from around the country and admitted without regard to financial circumstances.

The new school is named after author and philanthropist Rebecca Haile and her husband Jean Manas, who together launched the EEI to invest in the education of children in Ethiopia, the country that Ms. Haile left as a child. Back in 2017, Ms. Haile and Mr. Manas engaged Flansburgh to develop a campus master plan for the EEI's new school. The successfully completed Master Plan then became the basis on which renowned Ethiopian architect Fasil Giorghis designed the new buildings that will one day house the Haile-Manas Academy.
