Jack Kerouac Center

Museum and Performance Venue | Lowell, Massachusetts

The proposal for the new Jack Kerouac Center in Lowell, Massachusetts is a museum and performance venue designed to bring the literary icon fully home while anchoring the revitalization of the city's Acre neighborhood. Developed in partnership with the Jack Kerouac Foundation following singer-songwriter Zach Bryant’s recent purchase of the original On the Road scroll and the historic St. Jean Baptiste Church where Kerouac served as an altar boy, the project aims to enrich downtown cultural life. Preliminary renderings, recently shared with the Lowell community at its annual folk festival, showcase a design that deeply respects the historic fabric of the church while introducing a lasting tribute to Kerouac’s free spirit, creating an inviting space where future generations can reflect, enjoy, and learn.

The architectural scheme features a modest, rounded, stone-clad addition that greets visitors with a glimpse of the creativity held within. Inspired by Kerouac’s “stream of consciousness” process, Flansburgh Architects designed the new façade to unfold without a clear beginning or end, inviting patrons into a journey of discovery. Inside, a layered section with multi-directional windows deliberately frames local landmarks connected to the author's life. This new wing also houses a dedicated room to display the legendary scroll, listening spaces, two open galleries for local artists and rotating artifacts, a bookstore, venue ticketing, and a roof terrace overlooking the city. Meanwhile, the former St. Jean Baptiste Church will be converted into a 1,200-seat performance hall complete with a recording studio, convening space, and permanent exhibit areas, gracefully blending historic preservation with contemporary culture.
