Berkshire Country Day School | Furey Hall
Renovation of Academic Facility | Stockbridge, Massachusetts
Located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the Berkshire Country Day School is an independent school serving students from pre-kindergarten through grade 8. The campus is a charming collection of historic, rustic Tudor-style buildings arranged around a central green. The campus began as Brook Farm, an 1890’s residential country house with barns and out buildings. The project renovated Furey Hall, the original cow barn of Brook Farm.
The lower level was converted to two new spaces: a Library and Learning Commons with a glass-enclosed distance learning room; and a music room with a small performance platform. The historic timber and stone structure was enhanced with a glass wall strengthening the connection to the central green. The Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons is the main room in Furey Hall. The partial removal of the ceiling has allowed natural light to flood the room, while the exposed wooden beams and the slender white pilotis articulate the symbiosis between the building and its occupants.
